Some villages make do with a single beach. Mirleft lines up nearly a dozen of them along a few kilometers of Atlantic coast, each with its own character, light and crowd. Ochre cliffs, secret coves, long stretches of sand swept by the trade winds: between Legzira to the north and Sidi Ifni to the south, this corner of southern Morocco is an unrivaled playground for anyone who loves the ocean. Here is our tour of the beaches of Mirleft that we recommend to every traveler passing through our doors.

Aftas, the village beach

Aftas is the beach you love by heart — the one you reach on foot from the center. Tucked between two rocky headlands, it is the most accessible and the liveliest. In the morning, fishermen haul up their blue boats; in the afternoon, beginner surfers find gentle, well-formed waves.

  • Who it's for: families, beginner surfers, travelers without a car
  • Mood: friendly, with a few cafés right on the sand
  • Tip: low tide reveals wide sandbars, perfect for a long walk

It is also the best starting point for exploring the rest of the coast. From our rooms, many of our guests head down at first light before breakfast. If you'd like that "beach before coffee" ritual, consider book your stay in a room ideally facing the ocean.

Imin Turga and the Great Beach: space and wind

A few minutes south of the village, Imin Turga — known to everyone here as the Great Beach — unrolls an immense ribbon of golden sand. This is the place for wide-open spaces: you can walk for ages without meeting a soul, fly kites, and watch the Atlantic swells form far offshore.

  • Who it's for: walkers, photographers, sunset lovers
  • Mood: wild and breezy, ideal for unwinding
  • Tip: the wind can pick up in the afternoon — come early for swimming, later for the show of the waves

It is arguably the strongest contender for the title of most beautiful beach in southern Morocco, if only for the evening light that turns the sand to copper.

Tamhrouchte, the wild beach

For lovers of solitude, the wild beach of Mirleft has a name: Tamhrouchte. You reach it by a track that drops down between the cliffs, and the effort pays off. No snack bar, no parasol: just the ocean, the sand and the cry of the gulls. It's the kind of place where you understand why this coast has stayed so unspoiled.

  • Who it's for: adventurers, couples seeking quiet, nature lovers
  • Mood: raw, intimate, out of time
  • Tip: bring water and a hat — there are no services here; check the tide times before heading down

Legzira and Sidi Ifni: the open sea to the south

You can't talk about the region without mentioning Legzira. Its famous red sandstone arch, carved by the sea, is one of the most iconic images of the Moroccan coastline. At sunrise and sunset, the rock glows orange — a moment you don't forget. The Legzira beach is earned with a short walk, and its red cliffs alone make the detour from Mirleft worthwhile.

Further south, Sidi Ifni spreads out its broad bay and its singular atmosphere, inherited from its Spanish colonial past: art deco façades, an airy seafront, and a long urban beach where fishermen land the day's catch.

  • Legzira: for the arches, the photography and the golden evening light
  • Sidi Ifni: for the architecture, the harbor and a more city-like interlude

A single day is enough to combine the two starting from Mirleft, and we'll gladly point you to the best route. On the way back, nothing beats a table facing the sunset: consider book a table to round off the day over a fresh grilled fish of the day.

Make Le Grand Atlas your base camp

The secret to enjoying all these beaches comes down to one word: location. Set in the heart of Mirleft, Le Grand Atlas is the ideal base for exploring the coast — Aftas just steps away, the Great Beach a few minutes off, Legzira and Sidi Ifni within easy reach. In the evening, you come home with salt on your skin, sit down facing the ocean, and start again the next day on a new beach.

Whether you come for the surf, the walking or simply the silence of wide-open spaces, we'll be delighted to welcome you as if you were home. Book your stay facing the Atlantic, or write to us to plan your beach tour: contact us. The coast is waiting for you — and so are we.
